Dance Film Night

Join us this Thursday night, the 13th, at 6:00 PM in the Rio Grande Gallery Theater. Julie Nathanielsz, who teaches both Anatomy for Dancers and Choreography at ACC, will be guiding the discussion as we watch 3 great dances:

Sutra (2010) - Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui
One Flat Thing Reproduced (2007) - William Forsythe
Solo (1997) - William Forsythe

Julie picked two of the three pieces because “they both use objects as landscapes in contrast to sets. [The objects] change the horizontal plane.” Most dancers would be more familiar with a traditional stage version of objects influencing space. As Julie says, “theatrical dance engages open space. You have the floor and wings but these pieces have an added element of interest by using movable objects.”

The third piece, Solo, is yet another approach to space and objects. “The piece is an example of ways movement is conditioned by architecture; how this engages our imagination and how we move in relationship with architecture,” she said.

Julie believes viewing works such as these is an important way to “engage our form.” It’s an exercise in broadening our own understanding of choreography. “Think of it as choreographic thinking. We look at the results of different choreographic processes,” she said.

The event is free so don’t forget to bring friends – even if they’re not dancers! These pieces are especially influenced by visual arts so bring along any artists you know.
